FRIENDSHIP STAR

Attached is the simple pattern with instructions. Size: Finished - 7.5" Unfinished - 8.0"

FabricMeasurement & Quantity

For 3" finished block cut:

*4@1-1/2" squares from light fabric for corner squares                                                 *2@2" squares from light fabric for half square triangles                                                   *1@1-1/2" square from med/dark fabric for center square                                               *2@2" squares from med/dark fabric for half square triangles

 For 6" finished block cut:

*4@2-1/2" squares from light fabric for corner squares                                                 *2@3" squares from light fabric for half square triangles                                                  *1@ 2-1/2" square from med/dark fabric for center square                                                *2@ 3" squares from med/dark fabric for half square triangles

Make the Half Square Triangles (HST)

*Draw a diagonal line from one corner to another on the back of the light squares cut for the half square triangles.                                                                                                                             *Put the light square right sides together with the med/dark squares cut for the half square triangles.                                                                                                                                         *Put the white square right sides together with the red 3.5" square.                                              *Sew 1/4" away from the line on both sides of the diagonal line.                                                     *Cut down the center, diagonal line.                                                                                            *Press seams towards the med/dark fabric. Repeat with the remaining light and med/dark squares cut for the half square triangles. You should now have 4 completed half square triangles.                                                                                                                                     *Using the 45 degree angle on your ruler (6" square rulers work great for this), align the 45 degree line along the diagonal seam. Trim the square down to 1-1/2" (for the 3" finished block) or 2-1/2" (for the 6" finished block). Trim a little off each side for a perfect half square triangle.

Plagued by UFOs?

Advice heard on the Dr. Phil show on how to find inner peace: "The way to achieve inner peace is
to finish all the things you have started and have never finished."

Here’s help with the first step on your journey to inner peace: The UFO Program for members only!

This program is an encouragement to help you complete those pesky Un-Finished Objects – we ALL have ‘em! - that are just PARKED IN ORBIT, taking up SPACE and making us feel slightly ACCELERATION SICK & guilty about WANTING to buy new fabric or start something else new instead. Connie Zwego has BEAMED UP to monitor this program.

Here’s how the program FLIES:

ENLIST by bringing an 81/2" X 11" sheet of paper to January or February meeting (or email to UFO Chairperson Connie Zwego) with:

Your Name & phone number

Your numbered list of UFOs (1 or 300 – quantity does not matter here)

Give description, title, other identifying information of each project.

PLANET now! Be thorough & look carefully – once list is submitted, it cannot be changed, altered or replaced for the duration of this FLIGHT!

Keep an exact copy of this list for yourself. REDUNDANT SYSTEMS are good.

When a UFO is completed -

o Show your completed-in-every-way UFO at our meeting’s Show & Tell, announce that this is #so-and-so on your list so the membership can cheer your progress.

o Write your name, name & number of UFO and date shown, on a 3"X5" card and give it to Connie to be BLASTED OFF your list.

Your name will be entered in the $50.00 grand drawing (once for EACH completed UFO scratched from your submitted list). Drawing will be in December!  Last chance to show completions = November meeting.

There are NO penalties for CRASH AND BURNS (UFOs on list still not completed at the end)!

So be a STAR, LAUNCH yourself into action by organizing your MANIFEST list and begin the COUNTDOWN! ZERO GRAV right through that list as if it were nothing more than a GAS NEBULA. The PAYLOAD is not only the satisfaction of SEARCHING for UFOs, finally getting your UFOs safely LANDED and RESCUING your stash shelf SPACE but also be BOOSTED into eligibility for a nice bonus from the guild UNIVERSE as well. (And, of course, there’s that inner peace thing, too.)

Keeping you in Stitches, ConnieZ Questions?

PS. Let me emphasize again that this is for your projects ALREADY STARTED but not yet complete at the time your list is submitted, not a list for things you plan/hope to do in the future!!

The KANSAS QUILT and the MISSOURI QUILT were designed, assembled and quilted by Guild members. They depict the character and heritage of their land and residents. They have received numerous honors and ribbons in competitions. Each one has been loaned to the home-state governors for display in the capital rotundas and in their personal offices. They were always displayed at the annual Quilt Show. Members may check out a quilt for use in a not-for-profit speech or display that further the art of quilting. Requests should be submitted, in writing, to the Board for their consideration.

Guild Sponsored Projects are determined by the Gift Quilt Committee with approval by the Board of Directors. We are pleased to participate in as many worthwhile projects as we have time, members and finances to complete. However, we need to ensure we have these three necessary components to see it through before we commit to any project of this nature. Guild members regularly contribute quilts to the Linus Project and the Missouri Highway Patrol. For more information about completing quilts for these worthwhile causes, please contact the Gift Quilt Chairman.

Each year the Guild completes an annual Opportunity Quilt. Tickets are sold for opportunities to win the Opportunity Quilt, which is awarded in April of each year. To view the 2012 quilt please click on the quilt below.
