Programs - Workshops & Future Programs

Pograms are scheduled for each monthly Guild meeting. Programs range from nationally known quilters/teachers to mini-workshops presented by guild members.

Workshops

Workshops are held approximately nine times each year. Half-day workshops are scheduled the day of Guild meeting following lunch. Full-day workshops are typically scheduled the Wednesday following the meeting. Information about upcoming programs and workshops is in each newsletter. We attempt to keep the costs of the workshops as low as possible. Guild members are invited first to participate in the workshops. If the workshops are not filled with Guild members, members of other local guilds are invited to participate. Reservations for the workshops are made by signing up in advance at our meetings or by calling the Workshop Chair. Payment for the workshops confirms your reservation. Sometimes, in addition to the fee for the workshop, there are supply fees for kits, patterns, etc. provided by the teachers. We typically order deli lunches on workshop days. You can order your lunch when you sign up for the workshop. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch.

I would like to share my thoughts regarding the workshops being offered for our Guild members. Sometimes we see the photo or pattern for a class, and think “Oh yuck, those colors are not my style at all, I’ll never make that!” or “Wow, that’s too hard for me!” or “Noooo, I tried that once and it turned out horribly!” But wait a second, nobody says you have to match that color palette, use the colors YOU like. Too hard or tried it once and weren’t happy with the results, that’s why we pay for teachers. The teacher is being paid to show YOU how to achieve that technique! You may never make that sample again, but you may enjoy making something that uses the same process. If you need further explanation during the class, then speak up. Keep in mind: (1) that the teacher wants you to succeed and (2) there is probably someone else in the class struggling with the same issue. This is your chance to question, learn and practice. These past two days, I learned great sewing tips and made friends – [worth more than the price of admission].       Mindy Roeske – Workshop Chair

Future Programs

To ensure your reservation for a class please sign up early and submit your payment at that time. There are only so many spaces available so those who confirm their reservations with their payment are guaranteed a spot. Non members will be charged a fee for attending meetings when the presentation is by a nationally recognized speaker.

Please remember that until you pay for a workshop your spot in the class is NOT confirmed. One more thing, if you have not paid your dues, you will be charged an additional $5.00 to take a workshop.  If you have any questions please contact me.                             Mindy Roeske – Workshop Chair

SEPTEMBER: Barbara J Eikmeier The program is "It's all in the Sashing".  She's from Lansing, KS and is a friend of our guild member Doris Hendrickson.  Barb has been quilting since 1984 and teaching quilting since 1990. She is the author of two books (“Kids Can Quilt” and “Traditional Quilts for Kids to Make”) and co-author, with Sally Schneider, of a third book (“Traditional Quilts with Painless Borders”) – all published by Martingale and Co. and all currently out of print. Married to a career Army officer, she has lived in several regions in the US as well as S. Korea exposing her to many quilting styles. Barb considers herself a traditional quilter and appliqué is her favorite quilting technique. She lives in Lansing, KS with her husband, two dogs and two cats. Her two children are grown and live on the East coast.  Her Lecture: “It’s all in the Sashing” features quilt arrangements that utilize sashings and cornerstones to create alternate designs or to enlarge the overall quilt size. If you have piles of blocks from block exchanges, yard sales or just because you haven’t found the right setting yet, this talk may offer the inspiration you need to move forward! See 20-25 pieced and appliqué quilts as we work our way from simple to more complex settings with a few “problem children” along the way! Sketches and photos are fine as long as they are for your personal use only. Marlene saw her at Heartland and said that she does GREAT work and has TERRIFIC ideas.

OCTOBER:  Sherry Whetstone will be teaching EMBELLISH ME! after her program. From 1 pm to 4 pm you will get to play with beads, buttons, jewelry, trinkets, ribbon, fabric scraps, yarns & threads – whatever fun things you have. The cost is $20.00. The possibilities for gifts &/or boutique items just got HUGE with this class. Register [& pay] in September for a confirmed place in this SKILLBUILDER!

NOVEMBER: In November we will have an all day workshop with Donna Lynn Thomas. Her Miniature Santa is AMAZING. It is NOT paper pieced and aren’t we all dying to know how this is done??? Those of you that saw Donna’s class sample at the August meeting, are still wondering about those tiny triangles and several signed up on the spot. I think this class will have a waiting list! What a wonderful technique to add to your “skill basket”. The cost for this workshop is $30.00.

 DECEMBER: Carol Box Storyteller

Suzanne Marshall will present a program and workshop in April of 2012
